Personally the latter is more important,this is not to say that we  should live our lives according to the whims of others but we shouldn't be oblivious to other peoples feelings .Some people often wonder why they are never shown appreciation for the things they do,maybe they should analyse how they treat the people they try to help and the fact that they even think about this is not good .You should do good not because you want something in return but because it makes you feel good to do it.................
